Major Assignment 1

Rhetorical situation, Genre, Audience. What do they all have in common? What makes them so important to writing? We go through each day using these whether we know it or not.

A rhetorical situation is the way a person persuades, informs, entertains, or educates an audience. It’s the setting of which you are trying to give your audience. When speaking, or writing, a person will generally try to pull you in and make you want to listen or read what they are trying to tell you.

Genre is the type or writing or speaking a person is doing. It is a set up for what you are going to read about. If I were to tell you that the genre of a story is a mystery, you would then expect it to be about a murder or a crime that was committed and the main character(s) are trying to figure out how it happened or who did it.

Your audience is who you speak to. It is who you intend your story or writing to speak to. It’s who you want to understand what you’re saying.

Ceci-
I love how you started your introduction with questions regarding genre, rhetorical situation, and audience. That is definitely a great attention getter and can foreshadow what you’re going to talk about in your paper.

As far as your concerns, I think you have a great introduction. like I said before, the questions really are a great asset to use to reel the reader in. You do a really good job at ending each sentence of a paragraph at a good place, I’m not sure if you want to think about foreshadowing at the end of one to the beginning of the other paragraph, but that might be something you consider once you get to synthesizing each piece of writing. I don’t really think I can address your concern on your conclusion yet, I know you had intended to write more than what you have posted above. When you do make your conclusion though, I would consider ending the paper with almost a recap of what you’ve written about. I didn’t seen any citations so far in your paper, if you did get any of your definitions from another source than yourself I would just make sure you say something like “per the dictionary…” and cite the link to that page. In regards to length, I know you wanted to add more to this, and I think that would be a good idea. there are a couple requirements that you didn’t address, but once you address those like you have with the genre, rhetorical situation, and the audience I think your paper will be a great length.

I think once you address the remaining requirements with the assignment you’ll be very happy with your writing. You’re on a really good track right now!

Hey Ceci. So with what you have, I think asking questions to start out is a phenomenal start, I’m genuinely interested in seeing these questions answered now, and want to be persuaded or shown how we use those in our daily lives.

to flesh out the intro, i’d probably make a definitive statement like “…Now i’ll proceed to define these 3 terms to you in my own words, followed by how they are defined by three seperate authors…”. You can probably give background to each author to get to know them as people, before you go into defining terms that they said. Not many people think about Bitzer or Bazerman as people, food for thought, totally up to you.

so for format, I personally did: Intro > own words > Authors > synthesis. think of a good way to tease what paragraphs you’ll talk about next. like “and thats what Bazerman said about Genre, next we’ll see how genre and all these other definitions fit together as a synthesized theory of writing!” and then you’d talk about the synthesis of those definitions. See? easy transition.

For your end point, seek to clearly define the summary of what you just wrote, including having answers to all the questions asked in your intro. If you answered your intro questions in your body text, restate the answers at the end to try and wrap things up in a neat bow.

Citations can be tricky depending on the style, I personally prefer MLA, since it’s simple and easy, so i’d suggest using MLA format. Specifically, here is Purdue Owl’s page on MLA Citations:
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_in_text_citations_the_basics.html

I have yet to do my citations, but i guarantee you, that I will be looking at this page.

As for length, I personally wouldnt worry about it. 1200 words is super easy when you have to use a ton of words to explain complex concepts. Is 1200 words easy to define what a cheeto is? heck no, its a cheeto. is 1200 words easy when i’m trying to explain how thermodynamics works? 1200 words might not be enough! that’s what I mean. Just focus on explaining everything clearly and the words will come easy.

good luck! feel free to ask any questions if you need help.

This is a great start to understanding the 3 concepts. Consider adding 3 texts and analyzing them to better express your ideas. Your draft doesn’t really follow the assignment, but as I said, it is a great start.

Everything you’ve written so far is a great start for your paper. I like how you explain what each thing is before you dive into the rest of your paper. Each paragraph is a grear transition into your topic.

For your 5 concerns I would say that your introduction has a great attention grabber. The only thing that needs to be added would be your introduction of the pieces you’re using for the rest of the paper. Transitions for your paper will be easy to add by looking up synonyms for first, second, third and conclusion. I also think that for your conclusion you can just do the same thing that you planned for your intorduction and just restate what you’ve already told them to recap on what you’ve just talked about. Citations and length should be on the easier side, citations are easily made with the purdue owl site. The length of your paper will increase when you add your sources you will talk about and explaining the connection.

Overall, I think that as soon as you talking about the readings and give your opinions that you will give a great response to this assignment. Just make sure you give your own personal touch to each topic.
